April 2009: Cairns
New Work by Susan Hodgin
This exhibit is part of an ongoing series that explores the various shapes and forms of cairns: human-made mounds of stone. Susan Hodgin, an avid traveler, has been collecting images of cairns from as far away as Honduras and as nearby as Fountain Square. These images have provided the inspiration for this body of work.
According to Hodgin, “The circles (in these paintings) are representative of stones. I have balanced them on top of each other and layered them overlapping each other . . . I am in the second year of working on this series, and I have yet to exhaust the ideas and possibilities. Each painting is a part of an evolution of the work, the ideas that support it, and my accumulating life experiences . . . How will we all mark our passage through life? Will we start our own cairn to honor our presence? Will we erect a giant pyramid of stones in remembrance? Will we throw our cast-offs into the back of a truck? Or will we humbly and anonymously add our stone to a preexisting pile?”
The artwork hangs through April 25, 2009.
