2002: A New Home for the Arts in Indy
With the Harrison Center newly repurposed, we hosted our first exhibit with only a handful of studio artists. Today, the Harrison Center hosts more than 72 shows a year, supporting hundreds of artists, and is home to 37 talented studio artists at the Harrison Center.
2006: Cultivating Young Artists and Entrepreneurs
In partnership with Herron Classical Schools, the Harrison Center hosted its first Camp Classic. Since that time, it has grown into Summer Academy, which served more than 850 young people in 2022. Additionally, the Harrison Center has trained over 350 cultural entrepreneur interns over the years.
2012: The Beginning of Creative Placemaking
Recognizing the importance of enhancing the quality of life for all of our neighbors, the Harrison Center began practicing creative placemaking. Today, in partnership with the Indianapolis Neighborhood Resource Center, we teach creative placemaking to promote equity throughout the city.
2017: Preserving Black Culture
The music video production of the “Barbershop a Blessing” with Nabil Ince (Seaux Chill) led to a pivotal $75,000 Joyce Award in 2022 to preserve Black culture in Indy through music and video. In 2021, film director Dija Henry produced “Rasheeda’s Freedom Day” which is now touring and winning awards.
2019: Protecting the History of Our Neighborhoods
Our work elevating oral histories began in 2018 and has since expanded thanks to a partnership with Indiana Humanities and Central Library. In 2019, the beloved Polk building, in the Martindale Brightwood Neighborhood, was at risk of demolition. The Harrison Center worked to find owners to honor and protect its story.
2022: Safe and Inclusive Space for All
At the Harrison Center, we believe art is for everyone. Thanks to the generosity of our donors like you and funding partners, we can continue to provide a safe, convenient and inclusive environment for everyone in our community for another 20 years.
Make a gift to the Harrison Center today to celebrate our past and secure our future!
