Derrick Carter is a professional Indianapolis artist who specializes in a unique type of mixed media painting. Using sand and acrylic paint as a medium and blending his graphic design training and fine art inclination, he has created his own style of painting that communicates his beliefs and understanding of life’s contrast between the world and himself. Sand has become his primary medium in defining that meaning of difference. It helps him capture the creative interest through the viewer's eyes, but it also sheds light on the possibilities of an idea that might seem impossible. Being able to use a substance as simple as sand in the place of more traditional mediums helps to distinguish his work from other artists and sets his work apart.

As a young artist, Derrick’s work has been featured in multiple high-profile public art programs in Indianapolis including Art & Soul at the Indy Arts Garden, Welcome Race Fans collaborative project, Meet the Artist at the Indianapolis Central Library, and the Indianapolis International Airport’s temporary art program. In 2015, he exhibited work in Harlem, New York at the Harlem Fine Arts Show, the largest traveling African Diasporic art show in the United States. Through these programs, he has lead artists talks and engaged directly with the community around his artwork.

Through the years, Derrick’s work has received numerous accolades, including 1st place/best of show in the 7th and 8th Annual Flava Fresh Art Show and 1st place/best of show in the 24th Annual Meet the Artist African American Central Library Art Show. His work as a young artist is impressive and he has accomplished much in such a brief time.
