Meet Sophia
Hi, I’m Sophia, a new intern at the Harrison Center. Through this internship, I hope to gain a greater sense of what I am already passionate about: art, curating, and implementing artistic skills into influencing and positively impacting a community that I love.
We asked Sophia to walk around the Harrison Center and write about a piece of art that she finds interesting. Here’s what she had to say:
Getting to walk around the Harrison Center by myself today was a wonderful experience. Due to COVID, it's been awhile since I’ve properly been able to deeply view art in the flesh. The “Collection of slides from a family’s world travels in the 1960s” by Abi Ogle really struck me. Compositionally alone, it is a beautiful piece. The use of the fading, darker valued colors of the slides placed in between the borders of the white placement cards creates a beautiful yet complex pattern. The meticulous placement of the slides form the shape of a wave. The wave shape connotes a sense of transiency and impermanence, much like the pictures of passing moments that actually make up the physical piece. The way in which the piece was specifically lit highlights the abnormal, whimsical shaping of the slides combined together and also creates a reflection of the colors from the slides onto the backdrop of the white wall. While the physical piece itself evokes a sense of chaos, the reflection on the wall stood out to me as it almost resembled a quilt. This stark contrast of an object that conveys disarray and an object that conveys comfort and nostalgia is a very interesting conceptual component. Passing moments spent with family can feel overwhelming and chaotic, but when all pieced together and viewed from hindsight, they can be remembered as comforting and nostalgic, like a quilt.
This piece could be significant to the community as it is a commentary on family and how we should appreciate our families regardless of the madness that they can cause us. Moments of time are fleeting, so it is important to remember to live in the present.
We are so excited to have Sophia around! Check out some of her own artwork below!
