From the Heart
At a time that is tempting to turn inward and react emotionally in the same isolation we have experienced physically, Glick’s work urges us to live “From the Heart.” Many of the paintings feature the symbol of a heart or otherwise reflect on the “rollercoaster of emotions” of the past year. The controlled chaos of layered abstractions and mixed media is bursting with warm, bright energy pouring from a vein both deep and hopeful.
Glick’s use of color ranges from the pensive, as in “Nourishing Hearts,” to the vibrant streaks of “Reflection in Pink,” a portrait that might be ominous without the hues that remind the viewer of summer berry stains. The exhibit likewise blends pieces that feature her neo expressionist style alongside her modernist, collaged work. Together, these methods anchor “From the Heart” as a tangible hand to grasp within the realm of the conceptually emotional.
All of the artwork featured in the exhibit was created in 2020 and 2021, a time of collective difficulty and loss. The heart shapes that appear throughout the series of paintings often have open centers or crevices, a reminder of Glick’s intention in this body of work: that we might all open our hearts to each other.
“From the Heart” will be on display in the Harrison Gallery for the month of May. The exhibit can be viewed by appointment as well as in our online gallery, where all pieces are available for purchase.
