Growing Pains

This month, the Harrison Center has the pleasure of hosting an exhibit from the senior painters at the Herron School of Art & Design. This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase the talent of emerging local artists. While all of the featured artists are painters, the subject matter varies widely, from religious surrealism to Care Bears.

The visually diverse exhibit is inspired by something we all experience: growing pains. The romanticism of a blooming springtime or the joy of a child’s milestones paint with broad strokes our ideas of new growth. Sometimes it is a painful process, or strange, alienating, awkward or silly. “Growing Pains” explores it all, portraying the natural, the supernatural, the nostalgic, and the mundane.

Each artist takes on an individual tone that separates them within the group exhibit. After all, one’s childhood experiences are unique, even from one’s own sibling. The colors and images all, however, impart to the viewer a degree of significance. The vulnerability inherent in the transmission of a memory is a window into anyone’s soul. “Growing Pains” is a guided tour of many.
