Monumental Indy
City Gallery is one of eight galleries in the Harrison Center. Every month this space hosts new artwork focusing on place and celebrating the creativity of Indianapolis.
For the month of December, City Gallery is exhibiting paintings of the Monument Circle. The Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument has been the center of Indianapolis since the city was planned in 1820. It has since become an immediately recognizable symbol that viewers connect to Indianapolis.
Justin Vining, a plein air painter and artist in the show, has painted the monument more than 20 times over the years and still enjoys it as subject matter. Vining especially loves painting on the corner of Mass Ave, Alabama, and Vermont streets: “As a plein air painter, I love being in the heart of the city and painting during lunch hour; you can stand out there and have conversations with everyone. It's so iconic and distinct.”
Monumental Indy features Indianapolis-based artists: Justin Vining, India Cruse-Griffin, Kyle Ragsdale, Johnny Mckee, Mary Ann Davis, Donna Short, Dave Voepel, Johnson Simon, Carolyn Springer, Cierra Johnson, Courtland Blade, and Morgan Binkerd.
The show can be viewed anytime during the month of December in the City Gallery during Gallery Hours: Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. The works can also be viewed and purchased on our online gallery through January.
