wINDows
Every month, the City Gallery exhibits place-based artwork that celebrates the city of Indianapolis. For the month of March, the gallery is featuring Jessica Green’s oil paintings.
Green’s work is a celebration of Indianapolis and its everyday beauty. wINDows is a playful title for paintings that act as a window into Indianapolis and the people who call it home. Many of her paintings in this collection feature iconic Indianapolis locations such as Monument Circle, Central Library, the State House, views from Salesforce, and more.
Green considers this body of work to be a blend of cityscape and still life. Green has a unique process for how she constructs a painting, beginning by sourcing photos of the city to paint, either by taking photos herself or from friends who have great views of Indianapolis. Then, she works from still life setups in her studio and combines them into the cityscapes. Green often chooses to paint the objects around her, such as flowers, food, and even her toaster, each a part of her daily environment.
“I think my art is approachable and speaks for itself,” says Green. “It celebrates beauty in the everyday, recognizable, and relatable.” Each of Green’s paintings invites viewers to feel connected to Indianapolis and the stories that they create in it. “I love when people see my work and can say, ‘Oh! I work right there,’ or ‘I got engaged right there!’”
The show can be viewed anytime during the month of March in the City Gallery during Gallery Hours: Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. The works can also be viewed and purchased on our online gallery through April.
