Acceptable Decorations

In his exhibition Acceptable Decorations, Quincy Owens presents mixed media works that make the viewer question their perception of art. Art comes in many forms, and Owens embraces this sentiment through colorful, abstract works that allow the viewer to create their own interpretation of each piece. The title Acceptable Decorations offers one interpretation, but Owens encourages his viewers to ask what art is to them. When you look at art, what do you see? What does it invoke?

Acceptable Decorations was created with absolutely no expectations by the artist; though the collection of works may be full of bright colors and intriguing forms, it acts as a blank canvas for those entering the gallery to assign meaning to. Owens transforms the Harrison Gallery into a chameleon of an exhibition that shifts in meaning from one viewer to another, creating a unique experience for each person who enters the space. Acceptable Decorations follows a thread of imagination and creativity common among much of Owens’ artistic practice, encouraging visitors to engage with the art in new ways by creating stories for his work, whether they are reflective of intense emotion or simply act as an acceptable decoration within the space.

The show can be viewed anytime in Harrison Gallery during the month of June during Gallery Hours: Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. The works can additionally be viewed and purchased on our online gallery through July.
