Elements
The Hank & Dolly Gallery is exhibiting Stuart Alter's abstract acrylic paintings for the month of February.
For Alter, making art is a deeply personal process in which the act of painting becomes an alchemy-like process of expression. Whether he is seeking to capture the sensations of being in a specific place or a particular emotion, Alter's abstract works are bursting with his unique energy.
The painting "Urban Energy" juxtaposes the rigidity of manmade city architecture with the ethereal feeling of how light reflects off buildings. "Being an urban dweller for almost all of my adult life, I take great inspiration from living in a city and the ultimate supremacy of the natural environment," says Alter. "The abstract emanation of the colors as they burst forth from the canvas reflects the drama, vibrancy, diversity, and joy of an urban community."
“Ring of Fire” is one of a series of what Alter calls, burst paintings. "These bursts draw inspiration from the visual and structural center of an object like a flower or a galaxy, often its origin. The inward and outward process of painting them creates a three-dimensionality and renders the perspective ambiguous. The strokes and splatter combine structure with the unpredictability and randomness of everything around us… including us."
Elements is a lively body of work full of memories and places that captivated Alter, which he invites viewers to experience through his artwork. This show is open to the public anytime through the month of February during our posted gallery hours: Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The works can also be viewed and purchased on our online gallery through March.
