Entering In
Although I grew up on the Northwest side of town, I have recently reconnected to the Westside community. Professionally, I have shifted into a leadership position that pulls me through this part of our city as I help my church launch a new ministry in that community. This has evoked memories of watching baseball games at Bush Stadium and commuting downtown by bicycle through the White River trail.
I am experiencing a new season of entering into this space as more than a passerby or a guest. I am conscious, as I explore these neighborhoods with my daughter and meet people, that I am just scratching the surface. I don't pretend to engage as an expert, even though I’ve lived a few miles from here for most of my life. Instead, I notice and observe and begin to see.
While capturing images in my heart and on camera for this show, I found myself holding tension between beauty and grit, bright and dingy, poverty and perseverance, and presence and distance. I stood in a doorway of sorts, taking a first step and I invite you to do the same.
Entering In is on display in the Hank & Dolly’s Gallery for the month of March. See these works in person, or browse the full show on our online gallery.
