For Beauty's Sake

Herron School of Art & Design graduate Olivia Wilkins brings us a meditation on the natural world in her senior thesis exhibition, “For Beauty’s Sake.” Through lithographs and etchings, Wilkins depicts only floral subjects – rendering each flower with careful attention to detail in both color and black-and-white. The results feel at times scientific, like a botanist composing field drawings of their findings. Other times, the pieces feel almost abstract, bringing to mind the work of 18th Century American Painter Georgia O’Keeffe with contorting depictions of each flower’s infoldings.

Wilkins draws each piece from an up-close perspective as if the viewer were face level with the floral subjects. The result is immersive – a feeling that continues in surprising ways throughout the exhibit. Wilkins has cloaked the gallery entrance and exit with numerous chains of artificial flowers suspended by clear wire. Visitors must walk through the floating bulbs to engage with the artwork.

It’s evident that Wilkins wants the gallery space to feel therapeutic. “When people walk into my thesis show,” she says, “ I want them to feel like it’s a space where they can leave whatever baggage they’ve come with at the door.” She hopes her show will provide an opportunity for viewers to feel relief from “the weight of life,” even if for a moment.

If Wilkin’s subject matter seems uncomplicated, that’s on purpose. “This show plays on the idea of making art for the sole purpose of it being something beautiful to look at,” she states, “It is a push back against my own personal struggle with the idea that all art you create must be emotionally or politically charged.” Wilkins believes the uncomplicated enjoyment of her show is part of its power. That’s not to say she thinks little of her subject matter – “Nature has so much to offer us,” she states, “its complexity and variety are endless.” By treating nature as her muse, Wilkins hones in on what appears to be a simple subject, revealing a world of color and texture in the process.

“For Beauty’s Sake” will be in Hank & Dolly’s Gallery throughout the month of May. Stop in to see the exhibit in person, or check out the show through our online gallery.
