REEVALUATION
REEVALUATION is Israel Solomon’s reflection on his work. He aims to “stop, rethink, observe, and re-evaluate.” The gallery is composed of colorful acrylics on canvas. The works often include geometric patterns, religious iconography, and supersaturated colors. The subjects are black men, women, and children, highlighting their form and how they relate to each other.
Madonna and her Child depicts the Christ child seated on his mother's lap, bearing a golden cross in the same fashion that a monarch might bear a staff. A cool-toned mountain range and a foreground of the desert floor flank the image. Next to the pair is another luminous gold-toned child with braided hair. The Madonna's cyan and magenta robe obscures her form, and her sandalled foot stretches before the two children.
In Pieta, Fragments of colorful triangles dance at the base of an image of a crucified Christ figure. The figure lies unconscious in the arms of a hooded figure. A sun-like, orange halo emanates from their heads.
Arm in arm, civil rights activists stand in the wake of swathes of bright colors in the piece titled MLK Justice. Their figures are emblazed over the word justice in bold, red lettering.
REEVALUATION is a bold and compelling look at Israel Solomon’s artistic journey. See more of this work in our Underground Gallerythroughout February.
