The Harrison Center presents our July artist reception Friday, July 5 from 6 to 9pm. In the Harrison Gallery, installation and mixed media artist Abi Ogle’s show “Oh, you’ll change your mind” is rooted in a conversation of the familiar made strange. This collection of new fiber and installation work asks the viewer to enter into a space of uncomfortable intimacy. The pieces live in a place of ephemerality and beauty, and are more than meets the eye.

With support from the Sagamore Institute, the City Gallery presents Front Porch Civility, an exhibition of original manuscripts, and art interpreting the themes of the manuscripts, dedicated to exploring the theme of citizenship. The show features a curated a selection of original manuscripts from the extraordinary Remnant Trust collection, and local artists will respond to, and interpret, the themes of the texts in art. Part of the aim is to highlight different experiences of citizenship in both Indiana's and America's history. For example, an original printing of Mary Wollstonecraft's famous "A Vindication of the Rights of Woman: with Strictures on Political and Moral Subjects,” will be paired with a local artist's depiction of Madame Walker -- a well known civil rights activist, but also a proponent of women's rights and entrepreneurship. As another example, Plutarch's "Moralia” will be paired with an oil painting of May Wright Sewall -- a prominent suffragist in Indianapolis history, but also a major proponent of women's classical education (Plutarch is the cornerstone of classical education). This exhibit invites the public to engage all of their senses in a discussion of citizenship through the touch of the ancient manuscripts, the smell of the old books, the beauty of the art before them. Participating artists include Kyle Ragsdale, Alicia Zanoni, Benny Sanders, Kipp Normand, Johnny McKee, Courtland Blade and Abi Ogle.

Speck Gallery features Designed Oil on Canvas, paintings by Britt Ritchie. Ritchie describes her work as “expressions of color through layers, graphic elements and botanical impressions. Developing relationships between elements, creating a depth of layers balanced throughout the foreground and background that contrast and compliment a colorfully designed image with an abstract approach. The use of layering techniques that allow the image to transform between viscous and transparent in application creates a desired harmony in my paintings."

Textile artist Lucy Burton brings Souvenirs: Collection III to the Gallery Annex. In this exhibit, the artist uses natural dyes and etched imagery to manifest and illustrate memories.

The Underground Gallery features Word, a group show exploring the design element of typography.

In Hank & Dolly’s Gallery, Fr3ak sh0w by Simon Plemon explores unsettling imagery through a modern artistic lens.

Attendees are invited to don their red, white and blue and join Naptown Stomp in the post-July 4 fun with live music and swing dancing in the gym.

The work hangs through July 26.
