For the month of January, the Harrison Gallery is hosting Johnny McKee’s latest body of work. McKee found the title “beafterfore” (while watching the 2019 mystery film Knives Out) to be a word that envelops the feeling of confusion in day-to-day life. The works in this exhibit expand on this idea while also remaining faithful to the distinctive and often enigmatic style that McKee has cultivated throughout his career.

Sculpture Installation in the Path of 2024 Solar Eclipse

Visiting artist Henry Dean is completing the installation of an outdoor sculpture, Now and then/ Indianapolis, in front of the Harrison Center between now and the 13th.

Now and then/ Indianapolis celebrates the Cosmic event on April 8th, 2024—the 3 minutes 46 seconds total eclipse of the Sun. The sculpture in Indianapolis is one of a series of six that Henry is creating along the “path of totality” from Texas and Maine. The project has been underway for over three years and is documented in the Instagram journal @nowandtheneclipse24.

Now and then honors and celebrates community and landscape, anticipating the eclipse, experiencing its passing, then acting as a memory marker once the event is over.

Faces in Places

This month in the Underground Gallery, Basil Smotherman is exhibiting his latest body of work, Faces in Places.

This collection of watercolor and acrylic works offers viewers a unique perspective into the artist's personal interactions. Each piece showcases a connection between individuals and their surroundings while highlighting the artist's distinctive style of marking surfaces and using color to make bold statements about the subjects represented. The exhibit is an exploration of people, color, and the art-making process.

New Year, New Storytelling Drawing Sessions Schedule

After a brief break for the holidays, Storytelling Drawing Sessions are back! To ensure we continue to provide the best experience for our artists and models/storytellers, we have a new weekly schedule for Storytelling Drawing Sessions in 2024.

The first session of 2024 is scheduled for Thursday, January 11th at 1:30 pm in the Harrison Center's Sky Gallery. After that, the sessions will continue to take place every Thursday at 1:30 pm.

We look forward to connecting with and creating with more artists and storytellers this year.
