| Meet the 2024 Greatriarchs⎜ Linda Minter
|
The Harrison Center is excited to announce the completion of 12 new Greatriarch paintings by artist Tashema Davis. The Greatriarchs are long-term residents who helped write their neighborhood story. They remind us that every neighbor has a story that deserves to be heard.
"A dedicated community advocate, Linda Minter particularly cherishes her interactions with senior citizens. Currently serving on the neighborhood association, Linda passionately supports family values and community welfare. Her profound commitment to her Muslim faith resonates in her daily life. Notably, her distinctive red hijab mirrors her vibrant persona. The inspiration for this portrait stems from the renowned abstract artist Mavis Iona Pusey, a Jamaican-born American celebrated for her nonrepresentational artistry. Pusey, recognized for her abstract urban-inspired compositions, was a prominent figure in abstractionism. This artistic choice aligns seamlessly with Minter's experiences of relocating due to demographic shifts and witnessing transformations within the Martindale Brightwood community. Given that many Muslims abstain from visual depictions, viewing them as potentially idolatrous, Pusey's abstract style serves as an apt choice for this portrait." - Artist Tashema Davis

My name is Caleb Carroll, and I am an 11th-grade student at Herron High School. In my free time, I play piano, write, and animate stories. I decided to intern at the Harrison Center to improve my animation skills.
I've been interested in music for several years, and for the last 4 years, I've been writing my own stories. For the past 2 or 3 years, I've been animating one of my stories for my friends and family to enjoy. I find myself expressing my thoughts and emotions through my characters, even when I don't intend to in the story. I animate on index cards, using pencil and paper to bring life to my stories. |

Remembering Miss JoAnna LeNoir |
JoAnna M. LeNoir, a beloved Greatriarch of the Martindale-Brightwood neighborhood, passed away on her birthday, leaving a legacy of strength, compassion, and resilience. JoAnna moved to Indianapolis with her mother and siblings on July 14th, 1963, a day they commemorated annually as Rasheeda's Freedom Day. This story was made into a film in 2020 by the Harrison Center and Dija Henry of The Blue House. A devoted mother to four children, JoAnna's journey was marked by both joy and sorrow, including the passing of her daughter after a brave fight with cancer.
JoAnna was known for her wisdom and thoughtfulness, often sharing stories of resilience from her past, including the trials she faced as a young mother. Despite the hardships she endured, her spirit remained unbroken, making her a pillar of strength in her neighborhood.
Memorial services for JoAnna will be held on Saturday, November 30th, at Lavenia and Summers Funeral Home, located at 5811 East 38th Street. Visitation will occur from 10 AM to 12 PM, followed by a service from 12 PM to 1 PM, with burial at New Crown. JoAnna's indomitable spirit will be missed by all who knew her. |
