Johnny McKee

"Since graduating from Herron School of Art and Design with a BFA in 1997, Johnny McKee has been an active fixture in the Indianapolis arts community. He currently resides in the Irvington Historic District and is a Resident Artist at the Harrison Center, where he also occupies the roles of educator and curator of the Underground Gallery.

Now decades into his career as a contemporary mixed-media artist, McKee is most well-known for the starscapes and emotive clouds that remain constants in his oeuvre. These works often employ the use of various techniques and materials to evoke notions of liminality, memory, mystery, nostalgia, and negligibility. Through his ever-evolving blend of mediums -- painting, sculpture, photography, collage, woodworking -- McKee's compositions strive to capture the ethos of these intangible ideas and the questions they engender.
