Focusing on Highlight

This October, the Harrison Center’s Lift Gallery is proud to showcase the stunning work of Esayas Zerazion, an artist who transforms the traditional scratchboard technique into a profound exploration of light, shadow, and texture. Scratchboard, or scraperboard, involves meticulously scratching away dark ink to reveal a white underlayer, creating luminous highlights that bring subjects to life with extraordinary detail.

Zerazion’s mastery is evident in the intricate detailing of each piece. Every line he scratches away contributes to a broader narrative, where light and shadow interplay to reveal the character and essence of his subjects. His portraits are a study in contrasts; with luminous highlights set against a deep, rich black background. This delicate balance of light and dark creates a three-dimensional effect that brings his subjects to life with palpable emotion. The precision and patience required to create these works reflect Zerazion’s deep commitment to his craft, making each piece a celebration of the meticulous beauty in fine details.
