Seeker

For the Month of October, the Gallery Annex is exhibiting the eccentric ceramic work of Andrew Perry Davis. Entitled "Seeker," this collection of anthropomorphic sculptures, each aptly christened with titles such as "Frank," "Bub," and "Harvey," reflects the artist's desire to express human extremes of weakness and strength.

These ceramic voyagers often don protective suits to "allow them to explore a perilous environment." In a palette of muted neutrals accented with dashes of vermillion orange and slate blue, each character directly confronts the viewer opposite with an almost satirically inscrutable countenance.

"Seeker" presents figures consistent with themes of the absurd in Perry Davis' work, often coupled with visuals inspired by artifacts and antique toys. Inspired by his first job working in a flea market, he noted that the finds capturing his attention were ones that defied quick or easy interpretation. In presenting characters that offer the viewer familiarity at a glimpse, such as a space-suit-esque outfit or a wistful face reminiscent of the classic teddy bear, Perry Davis crafts the idea of a story using omission. Only by providing the mere framework of seemingly recognizable bits and pieces of time does "Seeker" allow onlookers to weave in the rest of the gaps with strands from their own narratives.

The show can be viewed anytime in the Annex Gallery through the month of October: Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. The works can also be viewed and purchased on our online gallery through October.
