The Future DNA
The Future DNA, presented by WE ARE Indy Arts, is an eclectic show of emerging and established artists. The presented works were selected by members of We Are Indy Arts from the ranks of Indianapolis’ up-and-coming Black artists. Featured artists include 13-year-old Dallas Simone Garrett, visual arts newcomer Angelita Hampton, and D. Powell Smith, among others.
Founded in 2015, WE ARE Indy Arts is a creative collective dedicated to giving exposure to African American artists from all over the diaspora. They aim to cultivate their community through art and education and initiate a groundbreaking cultural evolution. The blend of genres, styles, and mediums presented in this showing combine to represent a vibrant community in conversation with itself and its heritage and values.
Together the pieces ask what our relationship is to black culture, history, and heritage. What do we keep for ourselves, and what will we share? What will be the future of our DNA? Who will carry our legacy? What will be pushed forward? The works presented in this show grapple with many issues, from police brutality to spirituality, and our environment.
This collaboratively curated collection sets graphite portraits of Muhammed Ali in context with bold fashion photography and chromatic landscapes. Handwritten African proverbs add pattern, texture, and context to geometric compositions. Mask-like faces recall people you have made memories with. Acrylic, marker, and cardboard combine for an intimate portrait of black masculinity. Animals pop out in jest. Plant imagery weaves through several pieces. The wide variety of subjects and media invites viewers to find the common threads and to examine the DNA of the show and each piece. With an array of influences to draw from,’ Future DNA” truly offers something for everyone to enjoy while discovering something new.
