Music in Place is an eight podcast series from the Harrison Center that focuses on place-based music. Much of our work at the Harrison Center emphasizes and explores place-- in our case, our city and home of Indianapolis, Indiana. The songs you’ll hear on Music in Place have been specifically written to celebrate Indy, its culture, people, and history by musicians who’ve done residencies at the Harrison Center. Some of the musicians are local to Indianapolis and others have come from all over the country to do residencies and write music that celebrate urban Indy. Each podcast episode is curated to put these songs in context, with themes ranging from People Make the Place, about the individuals who make up our communities, to Black Spaces, about the physical and emotional spaces that support and celebrate the Black community.

We just published the last installment in the series, and the episode is a tribute to our annual music festival, IMAF, the Independent Music and Arts Festival, which would be in its 19th year. It’s held in the Old Northside neighborhood around the Harrison Center, on 15th and Delaware, with local food vendors, artisans selling crafts from tents, and stages where many local and regional artists perform. Like most other public events, we have had to reinvent this festival in the interest of public health as a digital version.

Episode 8 is a preview of an IMAF vinyl release that will be available for purchase later this year. The vinyl will feature a line up of some of our favorite musicians and songs from past artists who’ve done residencies at the Harrison Center. We’ll also premier a few new songs, including one from Brother O Brother, a group from Indianapolis who would have performed live at this year’s IMAF.

We invite audiences to stream Music in Place for a curated sampling of the musical talent that has come through the Harrison Center over the years. Enjoy a festival’s worth of local and regional musicians from the comfort of your own home.
