Consuming Love

For Josh Huron, the artist behind Consuming Love, making his series of ink drawings was a way to process deep questions regarding his faith. The exhibit highlights 13 questions Jesus asked during his ministry that provoked many emotions from his followers.

The concept for the show started with Huron’s community group that he participates in at his church. It was there that Huron was having discussions about Jesus’s ministry and found that he felt challenged by many of the questions in the Bible and inspired to use art to respond to them. “A lot of those questions– ‘Why did you doubt?’ ‘Why do you love me?’ They aren’t nice questions, they are combative,” Huron says. “I’ve focused more on that side of my faith– the straightforward, in-your-face questions. Hearing those questions, Jesus asked and the answers he gave has really brought healing.”

Huron’s life has not been without trials. From the recent loss of his father to chronic health issues and big life changes, Huron has often found himself asking, “God, why would you do this?” Huron began the drawings in December and finished in August. In the nine months he spent on the work, he meditated on the questions.

The form of the drawings represents Huron. “The words are hidden, and that represents me during this process. I haven’t been able to always pick out the heart of what my faith is. I’ve tried to hit the nail on the head, and I've missed. It’s not necessarily easy to hear these questions and go through the process of coming to an answer.”

Huron sees Consuming Love as the most important piece: “It is the culmination of everything. It is the answer to the questions. Jesus has a fierce and consuming love.”

Consuming Love will be in the Hank & Dolly’s Gallery through the month of October. The works can additionally be viewed and purchased on our online gallery through November.
