Radiant
Beth Guipe Hall’s show of encaustic collages, titled Radiant, will be in Sky Gallery through the month of March. Hall has always loved collage and in graduate school she discovered and experimented with materials that led her to develop her unique practice. Hall’s collages involve paper and paint and a variety of materials that she fuses in layers of wax.
The work exhibited in Radiant is a collection of work from across Hall’s career. “I was using images I took or found and used photoshop to change them. Then I started making things with no recognizable imagery so people could land on negative or positive space. I wanted them to be something where you can make up meaning.”
When Hall begins her process, she thinks of her work as map-making and considers them symbols to represent conduits of travel and navigation. While the elements Hall uses in her work have personal symbolism, Hall likes that they hold no obvious meaning to viewers: “Anyone who looks at a piece of art is bringing their own experiences and interpretations to it.”
One element that is a recurring symbol in Hall’s encaustic collages are circles. Hall has always liked circles: “They are like hugs, they are protection. In geometry everything starts as a circle. It is also a compositional device because there is a lot of chaos and a circle has a flow to it. It’s a feminine symbol and could be a vessel.”
The show can be viewed anytime through the end of March during Gallery Hours: Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. The works can additionally be viewed and purchased on our online gallery.
