Changing Faces
Changing Faces from artist Kenneth Hordge, known better as FingerCreations, is a celebration of deft portraiture and exuberant abstract work. Mostly known for his large-scale celebrity likenesses, this show features a significant number of non-figurative pieces that showcase a wilder instinct when contrasted with the diligent and precise portrayal of each famous face.
What unites the work is an instinct for vibrant, selective color use. When you enter the annex, rhythmic brushstrokes glitter from the walls, beckoning the viewer to look closer. Saturated neon colors erupt under broken shards of sparkling glass. In the distance, Sinatra stares with icy calm in a monochromatic composition, while black rectangles impose order on chromatic chaos on an adjacent wall.
Hordge chooses iconic facial expressions for each portrait; each pop culture moment is easily recognizable. This work is about persona, as opposed to an intimate portrayal. Each creation is a character study venerated in resin. How do you view Biggie? What do you see in Marilyn? Every glittering surface reflects the audience's point of view. Hordge's work, both abstract and representational, invites the viewer to create their own experience and make their own meaning.
Hordge's sharp and shiny canvases tap into our collective nostalgia. They ignite memories, reminding us of key moments in our lives and the connections surrounding them. Where were you when you heard Stevie, Ray and Jimmie? What did it feel like to hear Prince for the first time? As the faces change, so do the memories.
The show can be viewed anytime in the Gallery Annex during the month of May during Gallery Hours: Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. The works can additionally be viewed and purchased on our online gallery through June.
