May We All
Having spent years creating a multitude of murals throughout Indiana, J.D. Bills is returning to the state capital to put on his show, May We All, in the Speck Gallery. Though its vibrant colors will only grace the expanse of the exhibition room throughout the month of May, its meaning will go so much further, as Bills pieces work to create a culmination of Indiana culture.
Easily identifiable, Bills energetic, and creative conglomerations showcase the interconnected nature of the Hoosier state. His kaleidoscopes of color make evident that the state is not only the crossroads of America, but is a place that many, from far and wide, can truly set roots in and call home.
Throughout his latest works, he highlights the multifaceted nature of what he terms Indiana’s “marriage of country and city life,” noting that, “we’re at our strongest when we come together” for such events as the Indy 500, and the numerous other festivities that make the month of May so magical.
Though this might bring about specific mental images of farmers or businessmen caught up in the hard hustle of day-to-day life, Bills recognizes a more universal and delicate aspect of Hoosier communities. The people in his paintings have bland, intentionally undefined faces and are of numerous shapes, sizes, and colors, operating as mirrors for those who view his work. For as Bills puts it, “the modern Hoosier can be from anywhere in the world,” and, though we may have differences or butt heads, we’ve all decided to “take pride in Indiana, maybe for a day, or maybe for a lifetime”.
The show can be viewed anytime during the month of May in the Speck Gallery during Gallery Hours: Monday - Friday from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. The work can also be viewed and purchased on our online gallery through June.
