Summertime

This June, Speck Gallery is proud to present a solo exhibition by Faith Blackwell, a visionary artist known for her dynamic and thought-provoking work. Blackwell’s latest collection is a vibrant celebration of summer delights, focusing on the playful imagery of watermelon and ice cream. Through her art, she aims to reclaim and honor these two iconic symbols, which have unfortunately been used as derogatory caricatures of Black people in American history.

Blackwell’s exhibition is an immersive experience, inviting viewers to rethink and challenge the inaccurate stereotypes of the past. Her ice cream cones adorned with pearls, waffle cones glittering with brilliance, and bold, chunky sunglasses infuse a sense of luxury and playfulness, transforming what were once symbols of mockery into emblems of pride and joy. The skate decks, painted in mouth-watering hues of blue, pink, and green, feature a delightful list of summertime ice cream flavors, evoking a sense of nostalgia and whimsy. The three watermelon photographs, with each slice slightly off-center, offer a visual feast that captivates the eye and engages the imagination.

Faith Blackwell’s work not only celebrates the joy and exuberance of summer but also serves as a powerful statement against historical misrepresentations. Her art is a testament to resilience and creativity, inviting viewers to appreciate the beauty and significance of these symbols through a fresh, contemporary lens. Don’t miss this enchanting exhibition at Speck Gallery, where each piece is a celebration of color, culture, and summer’s sweetest delights.

The show can be viewed anytime in Speck Gallery during the month of June during Gallery Hours: Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. The works can additionally be viewed and purchased on our online gallery through July.
