Faces of the Block

During the month of January, City Gallery will be displaying the group show Faces of the Block, a display of portraits featuring long-term residents of the Martindale-Brightwood neighborhood. This show engages with Harrison Center's mission of creating space to be seen and heard through art. The show's first installment, previously under the title Drawn to Neighbors, premiered in January 2023. This year will mark the third showing of this exhibit, curated by Caroline Park.

Faces of the Block came to life through Harrison Center's weekly Storytelling Drawing, a space for Martindale-Brightwood residents to recount their own stories and experiences living in the neighborhood. The goal of these sessions is not only to acknowledge but also to celebrate the impact of our neighbors who have deep roots within the community. In that respect, this new show aims to showcase our neighbors in a way that probes the viewer to discover new stories through the intersection of art and narrative.

This exhibit features the works of Barb Knuckles, Janet Fry, Paul Singleton, Kenyon Mason, Imani Rahman, and Alice Schwank.

Faces of the Block is open to the public to view anytime during January during our posted gallery hours: Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The works can also be viewed and purchased on our online gallery through February.
