“I love to sit on the porch in the morning as the sun comes up,” artist Jed Dorsey said. “It brings radiance to a dull landscape. It provides definitions to lost forms. Light changes everything.”

This month the City Gallery presents The Sun Also Rises by acrylic painter Jed Dorsey.

Purposed with conveying the theological depth of the sun’s light on all things, Dorsey’s work shows the different faces of his city in illumination. “I believe in something called common grace,” he said. “It is the idea that no matter who we are or what we’ve done, we all receive many blessings that make it possible to not only live, but also to experience goodness.”

As an artist who has always found inspiration in his city and in his desire to love it well through his work, Dorsey explained, “Light is always important to me in my artwork. And when I look at our city of Indianapolis, I love to see the light shining on it, bringing out its form, making it radiant. Sometimes it’s the sparkle of city lights at night against a velvet sky, and sometimes it’s the morning sun sending shadows fleeing. The light does not discriminate. It shines on all things no matter how good or bad, beautiful or ugly. It even shines on me, and for that I am thankful.”
