Manifold
For the month of March, the Hank & Dolly Gallery will be exhibiting Esther Hale's spacescape oil paintings.
Hale has always been fascinated by the cosmos and its mysteries. She is inspired by technological evolution and how humans can better understand their part in the grand scheme of the macrocosm. Drawing upon her background in philosophy and art, Hale explores the awe, fear, and ontological questions humans experience in relation to the cosmos.
Hale can trace this particular fascination back to her childhood. She was raised by an artist mother and a physicist father, making for a dynamic household full of curiosity and experimentation. When her father gifted her a copy of "Cosmos: An Illustrated History of Astronomy and Cosmology," she began creating art inspired by the galaxies she was seeing.
This body of work titled Manifold is a literal exploration of specific nebulas as well as a personal exploration for Hale: "Manifolds are a math term for setting parameters–You identify a certain number of points and using that data you can manipulate equations and make things happen." Says Hale. "It's poetic to use that as my title because calling the cosmos my manifold is getting rid of parameters– It is infinite space and unleashing creativity and unleashing myself.”
Manifold is an inspiring body of work that magnifies the beauty and wonder that Hale sees in the universe. You can view this body of work through the month of March, Monday - Friday from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m, or browse our online gallery.
