In the Harrison Gallery, Katharine B. Sutphin Retrospective, a collection of Katharine B. Sutphin’s surviving work.

In the Gallery Annex, the inaugural Katharine B. Sutphin Invitational, featuring over 35 of Indianapolis’ best artists invited by the Katharine B. Sutphin Foundation.

In the City Gallery, Landscapes, Real and Imagined by Melinda Huff-Spear.

In the Speck Gallery, Rosa Joy by Lyndy Bazile.

In the Hank & Dolly’s Gallery, Revolutions and Revelations by Thomas Peck.

In the Underground Gallery, Returning to the World: Vietnam Veterans Journeys by Jack Wickes.

Alongside First Friday, the Harrison Center will also host Fringe Night in partnership with the IndyFringe Festival, a celebration of the arts in Downtown Indy. In the Lift Gallery, viewers can enjoy artwork on cardboard by Kenyon Mason as well as Fringe on Wheels, a mobile performance venue parked on Delaware Street.

In-person gallery tours will open for visitors Monday-Friday from 9 am - 5 pm. Online galleries will open on Saturday, September 2nd. Make an appointment or view the online galleries at harrisoncenter.org/buy-art.

Special Senior Hours are every Friday from 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm. No appointment is needed.

Katharine B. Sutphin Retrospective & Invitational

To honor the life and works of Katharine B. Sutphin, the Harrison Center is showing two brand new exhibitions this September, the Katharine B. Sutphin Retrospective and the inaugural Katharine B. Sutphin Invitational.

Over a span of nearly thirty years, Sutphin crafted an extensive and diverse body of work in many different mediums: acrylics, oils, batiks, pastels, ceramics, and more. While she passed away in 2014, her legacy remains.

Newfield curator Kjell Wangensteen will judge the Invitational featuring artists invited by the Katharine B. Sutphin Foundation. Works are varied in medium and include oil paintings, pyrography, and carvings on mixed media. Cash prizes will be awarded to the artists who place Best in Show, 1st-3rd, and Honorable Mention.

2023 Greatriarchs:

Linda Belton

The Harrison Center is excited to announce the induction of six new Greatriarchs this year. The Greatriarchs are long-term residents of the Martindale-Brightwood neighborhood. They are leaders, nurturers, mentors, and friends to the old and new residents of their neighborhood.

Meet Linda Belton.

"She is a local crochet artist that sells her work during First Fridays at the Harrison Center. Linda’s interest in fiber arts led me to discovering work by Xenobia Bailey, specifically her work that involves the repetition of multicolored concentric circles. I felt like this pattern was a good fit for Linda because it expresses her bright youthful and creative energy, as well as mimics the rings of a tree trunk. Ms. Linda Belton’s family had a three generational tree that meant a lot to them; as kids they played under that tree. It was unfortunately cut down to make room for electric lines." - artist Danielle Harrell

Introducing Amelia Smith, a bright and enthusiastic addition to the Harrison Center intern program. Amelia's vibrant energy and her eagerness to embrace new skills make her a promising intern who is sure to make a positive impact. If you happen to encounter her during First Friday, don't hesitate to extend a warm greeting.

Live Despite by Grace Graves

Enjoy the latest release from our summer intern Grace Graves.

Live Despite is the namesake of the EP and brings the conclusion of what community is, after conversations of memories, narratives of dinners, and stories of fruitful lives. The song talks about the feeling of being trapped in a changing life, changing world, or simply a changing neighborhood when that change isn’t wanted. It doesn’t debate if the change itself is good or bad to the people being changed or to the people who change, but showcases the discomfort it brings, and how it isn’t always easy to navigate. But even when this change happens, there can be goodness left to thrive, especially when you have a support system by your side, and it emphasizes the importance of community in all plights.
