Katharine B. Sutphin Retrospective

Through the month of September, the Harrison Center celebrates the work of late artist Katharine B. Sutphin with a retrospective that commemorates 30+ years of creativity. The exhibition includes almost fifty works that span a multitude of mediums as diverse as their subject matter.

Born in 1954 in Indianapolis, Sutphin exhibited an infatuation with the arts that evolved into an enduring passion that shaped the trajectory of her life. Her work graced the walls of galleries across the world, from New York to Sarajevo. Join us in honoring the indelible mark left by Katharine B. Sutphin, a visionary artist who fearlessly followed her creative muse for the better part of 59 years.

The show can be viewed anytime during the month of September in the Harrison Gallery during Gallery Hours: Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. The works can additionally be viewed through our online gallery.

Katharine B. Sutphin Invitational Winners

The inaugural Katharine B. Sutphin Invitational is now showing in the Gallery Annex featuring over 35 of Indianapolis’ best artists invited by the Katharine B. Sutphin Foundation.

Newfield curator Kjell Wangensteen judged the Invitational before the opening on Friday. Cash prizes will be awarded to the artists who placed Best in Show, 1st-3rd, and Honorable Mention.

We are excited to announce the following winners:

2023 Greatriarchs:

Diane Ivey

The Harrison Center is excited to announce the induction of six new Greatriarchs this year. The Greatriarchs are long-term residents of the Martindale-Brightwood neighborhood. They are leaders, nurturers, mentors, and friends to the old and new residents of their neighborhood.

Meet Diane Ivey.

"Diane Ivey is soft spoken, and has a kind and gentle soul. I chose to reference Ringgold’s sunflower quilt for multiple reasons for inspiration for Diane Ivey. When taking her picture, she was wearing a sunflower shirt and expressed her appreciation for the outdoors. She also conversed about how important it is to preserve the past in the present, but still make something new. Ringgold often did this in her quilts, and in the sunflower piece she referenced Vincent van Gogh." - artist Danielle Harrell

Make Friends from Your Front Porch

"Porching is about actively seeking to revive community, to build friendships and to learn together that the things that seem to divide us as neighbors aren't as important as those that bind us." says journalist Alexandra Hudson.

In her latest article in USA Today, Hudson discusses the concerning trends of social decline and the hope we can find through being a good neighbor and "the porching revolution."

Rosa Joy

The concept of nurturing takes on a multi-layered significance in Lyndy Bazile’s exhibition Rosa Joy, showing through September in the Speck Gallery. Bazile not only pays homage to the enduring bond between a mother and her child but also celebrates the potential of art to heal, connect, and explore the depths of our emotions and heritage.
