Landscapes, Real and Imagined

Artist Melinda Spear-Huff’s affinity for the Impressionist style alongside her eye for complementing contemporary interiors has led her to a variety of painting concepts throughout her 25+ years of experience in the field.

Now showing in the City Gallery, Landscapes, Real and Imagined, focuses on color harmony through minimalist landscapes that can easily be incorporated into what she calls “transitional interiors,” straddling the line between contemporary vigor and impressionistic openness.

The show can be viewed anytime during the month of September in the City Gallery during Gallery Hours: Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. The works can additionally be viewed through our online gallery.

Meet Morgan

Join us in welcoming Morgan Binkerd as an Administrative Fellow at the Harrison Center.

Morgan is a painter and writer from Anderson, Indiana. She holds a degree in English and writing and has a cognate in Visual Storytelling. Her art-making practice is centered around the experience of connection.

Morgan is interested in exploring the overlap of written and visual mediums. She will be sharing studio space and be mentored by artist Alicia Zanoni.

2023 Greatriarchs:

Terri Marshall

The Harrison Center is excited to announce the induction of six new Greatriarchs this year. The Greatriarchs are long-term residents of the Martindale-Brightwood neighborhood. They are leaders, nurturers, mentors, and friends to the old and new residents of their neighborhood.

Meet Terri Marshall.

"Terri has an online social media presence, filled with images of her grandchildren and mother, as well as reminders of God’s love. Her optimism led me to choosing a piece of Alma Thomas’s work. Alma Thomas liked to paint the beauty of the world around her rather than focus her artistic voice on creating a political message about the oppression of both African Americans and women." - artist Danielle Harrell

Vietnam Veterans at Storytelling Drawing

"When you come back (from Vietnam), you come back by yourself. You don't know anybody going in and you don't know anybody flying back with you... Coming home, even the flight home was kind of a lonely experience..." - Vietnam Veteran, Darryl Koch.

For the rest of September, the Harrison Center will feature a Vietnam Veteran as the model and storyteller at our weekly Storytelling Drawing Sessions. Join us on Wednesdays from 5:30-7 pm to hear the stories of Darryl Koch, Mike Curry, and Dr. Clete Ladd (pictured).

Storytelling Drawing Sessions allow community members to tell their stories and artists to listen, converse, and create. Learn more and register to attend here.

Creative Ways to Give

With the holidays approaching, many people also take this time of year to contemplate how they will give back to the organizations they love the most.

As you plan ahead, remember that the Harrison Center can accept gifts from appreciated securities, a required minimum distribution from your IRA (if 70 ½ or older), or a Donor Advised Fund. When you make gifts such as stocks or an IRA Charitable Rollover, it can provide a tax benefit to you, while also supporting the art and community work you appreciate at Harrison Center. The Harrison Center can also accept a gift you recommend from a donor advised fund.
